RESUMO

A novel algorithm developed within muon radiography to localize objects or cavities hidden inside large material volumes was recently proposed by some of the authors (Bonechi et al. 2015 J. Instrum. 10, P02003 (doi:10.1088/1748-0221/10/02/P02003)). The algorithm, based on muon back projection, helps to estimate the three-dimensional position and the transverse extension of detected objects without the need for measurements from different points of view, which would be required to make a triangulation. This algorithm can now be tested owing to the availability of real data collected both in laboratory tests and from real-world measurements. The methodology and some test results are presented in this paper. This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue 'Cosmic-ray muography'.

RESUMO

Cosmic-ray muon radiography (muography), an imaging technique that can provide measurements of rock densities within the top few 100 m of a volcanic cone, has now achieved a spatial resolution of the order of 10 m in optimal detection conditions. Muography provides images of the top region of a volcano edifice with a resolution that is considerably better than that typically achieved with other conventional methods (i.e. gravimetric). We expect such precise measurements, to provide us with information on anomalies in the rock density distribution, which can be affected by dense lava conduits, low-density magma supply paths or the compression with the depth of the overlying soil. The MUon RAdiography of VESuvius (MURAVES) project is now in its final phase of construction and deployment. Up to four muon hodoscopes, each with a surface of roughly 1 m2, will be installed on the slope of Vesuvius and take data for at least 12 months. We will use the muographic profiles, combined with data from gravimetric and seismic measurement campaigns, to determine the stratigraphy of the lava plug at the bottom of the Vesuvius crater, in order to infer potential eruption pathways. While the MURAVES project unfolds, others are using emulsion detectors on Stromboli to study the lava conduits at the top of the volcano. These measurements are ongoing: they have completed two measurement campaigns and are now performing the first data analysis. This article is part of the Theo Murphy meeting issue 'Cosmic-ray muography'.

RESUMO

Energy differences between analogue states in the T=1/2 ^{23}Mg-^{23}Na mirror nuclei have been measured along the rotational yrast bands. This allows us to search for effects arising from isospin-symmetry-breaking interactions (ISB) and/or shape changes. Data are interpreted in the shell model framework following the method successfully applied to nuclei in the f_{7/2} shell. It is shown that the introduction of a schematic ISB interaction of the same type of that used in the f_{7/2} shell is needed to reproduce the data. An alternative novel description, applied here for the first time, relies on the use of an effective interaction deduced from a realistic charge-dependent chiral nucleon-nucleon potential. This analysis provides two important results: (i) The mirror energy differences give direct insight into the nuclear skin; (ii) the skin changes along the rotational bands are strongly correlated with the difference between the neutron and proton occupations of the s_{1/2} "halo" orbit.

RESUMO

Lifetimes of states in the ground-state bands of (70)Se and (72)Se were measured using the recoil-distance Doppler shift method. The results deviate significantly from earlier measurements, requiring a revision of the conclusions drawn from a recent Coulomb excitation experiment concerning the shape of (70)Se. The new results lead to a coherent picture of shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient selenium and krypton isotopes. The coexistence and evolution of oblate and prolate shapes in this mass region is for the first time consistently described by new Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov-based configuration-mixing calculations which were performed using the Gogny D1S interaction.

RESUMO

Transition rate measurements are reported for the 2(1)+ and 2(2)+ states in N=Z 64Ge. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with large-scale shell-model calculations applying the recently developed GXPF1A interactions. The measurement was done using the recoil distance method (RDM) and a unique combination of state-of-the-art instruments at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). States of interest were populated via an intermediate-energy single-neutron knockout reaction. RDM studies of knockout and fragmentation reaction products hold the promise of reaching far from stability and providing lifetime information for excited states in a wide range of nuclei.

RESUMO

Lifetimes of prolate intruder states in 186Pb and oblate intruder states in 194Po have been determined by employing, for the first time, the recoil-decay tagging technique in recoil distance Doppler-shift lifetime measurements. In addition, lifetime measurements of prolate states in 188Pb up to the 8+ state were carried out using the recoil-gating method. The B(E2) values have been deduced from which deformation parameters |beta2|=0.29(5) and |beta2|=0.17(3) for the prolate and the oblate bands, respectively, have been extracted. The results also shed new light on the mixing between different shapes.

RESUMO

Over a 3-year period, 67 patients of the Hospital of Pau (Pau, France), including 64 patients hospitalized in the adult intensive care unit (ICU), were colonized and/or infected by strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa P12, resistant to all potentially active antibiotics except colistin. Most patients were mechanically ventilated and presented respiratory tract infections. Since cefepime and amikacin were the least inactive antibiotics by MIC determination, all ICU patients were treated with this combination, and most of them benefited. Cefepime-amikacin was found highly synergistic in vitro. Ribotyping and arbitrary primer-PCR analysis confirmed the presence of a single clonal isolate. Isoelectrofocusing revealed that the epidemic strain produced large amounts of the chromosomal cephalosporinase and an additional enzyme with a pI of 5.7, corresponding to PSE-1, as demonstrated by PCR and sequencing. Outer membrane protein profiles on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed the absence of a ca. 46-kDa protein, likely to be OprD, and increased production of two ca. 49- and 50-kDa proteins, consistent with the outer membrane components of the efflux systems, MexAB-OprM and MexEF-OprN. Thus, we report here a nosocomial outbreak due to multiresistant P. aeruginosa P12 exhibiting at least four mechanisms of beta-lactam resistance, i.e., production of the penicillinase PSE-1, overproduction of the chromosomal cephalosporinase, loss of OprD, and overexpression of efflux systems, associated with a better activity of cefepime than ceftazidime.

RESUMO

A 19-year-old girl developed a total venous infarct of the small intestine secondary to extensive portal thrombosis, on the 21st post-partum day. She had started to take an oral contraceptive on the 9th post-partum day, and the association of these two factors appears to have played a major role in the physiopathology of this accident. Diagnosis is difficult and often delayed in this affection, which can only be suspected as a function of the previous medical history. Prognosis is usually very poor in cases of massive mesenteric vein infarcts, and can only be improved by early removal of the venous obstruction, with or without intestinal resection.

PIP: The article presents the case of a 19-year-old woman who developed a massive venous enteromesenteric infarct secondary to extensive portal thrombosis on the 21st day postpartum. The patient, who died notwithstanding tentative surgery to bypass the mesenteric obstruction, had started taking oral contraceptive (OC) pills on the 9th day postpartum, rather than wait until the return of menstruation. According to recent statistics thromboembolic risk is 9/100,000; the risk is multiplied by 6 in the postpartum, and by 3 under OC treatment. The diagnosis of venous mesenteric infarct is very difficult, and must take into consideration all possible antecedents. The treatment can sometimes be clinical; only surgery, however, can cure the problem, and bring the chances of survival to about 50%.
